Abstract
Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is still poorly understood and remains challenging subject among chronic pain diseases. A few published studies have reported epidemiologic data about CRPS. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiological characteristics including patient demographics, etiological events, duration between symptom onset and diagnosis, and treatment modalities applied to CRPS in Korea.

Methods: Medical records of 61 patients with the diagnosis of CRPS, based on modifi ed international association for the study of pain criteria between January and June 2007, were reviewed in Ajou University Hospital.

Results: The peak age incidence was 41-50 years. The upper and lower limbs were equally affected. The most common inciting event was minor trauma such as sprain or contusion (41%), and 15% of the patients had no specifi c event. Two third of the patients were unable to return to their work again. The mean interval between the pain onset and fi rst diagnosis of CRPS was 10 months.

Conclusions: Time interval between CRPS pain onset and diagnosis with CRPS is delayed, which means proper treatment ould be also delayed. In addition, many of CRPS patients could not perform their social activity in spite of multiple therapeutic interventions.
